Common Patterns Across Conjugations:

If we ignore the present simple of “er” verbs, we can note the following standard endings in French:

‍ ‍ singular plural

1st person‍ ‍-s ‍ ‍ -ons ‍ ‍

2nd person‍ ‍-s ‍ ‍ -ez

3rd person -t -nt

Note the repetition of “s” in both the 1st person and 2nd person singular forms - conjugating with this pattern will reduce the forms you need to memorize.

Common Patterns Across Conjugations:

We can compare verbs across conjugations by using this pattern:

e.g. the present simple of finir

‍ ‍ singular plural

1st person‍ ‍finis ‍ ‍ finissons

‍

2nd person‍ ‍finis ‍ ‍ finissez

3rd person ‍ ‍finit finissent

Compare this to the imparfait of aimer

‍ ‍ singular plural

1st person‍ ‍aimais ‍ ‍ aimions ‍

2nd person‍ ‍aimais ‍ ‍ aimiez

3rd person ‍ ‍aimait aimaient

We even see certain irregular verbs following this pattern:

devoir - to need to, must

singular plural

1st person: je dois‍ nous devons ‍

2nd person: tu dois vous devez

3rd person: il/elle/on doit‍ ‍ils/elles doivent
